ECE 95/54 Type Approval

UN ECE R95 tests encompass a series of evaluations conducted in accordance with the relevant regulations to assess the safety of passengers in the event of a side collision for vehicles falling within specified categories as outlined in the directive. ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for motor vehicles and their components, establishing approval or uniform approval procedures. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully suitable for approval through individual measures in the country of use. What is lacking is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Applications for the approval of a vehicle type concerning passenger protection in the event of a side collision are made by the vehicle manufacturer or their duly accredited representative. If asymmetric side structures exist and are not significantly different enough to affect performance in a side impact, tests will be conducted on the driver’s side. The manufacturer will provide information on the comparative performance with the driver’s side when tests are conducted on that side to the authority responsible for approval. Different criteria may be required for vehicles equipped with electric powertrains.
